The Science of Dieting

The Science of Dieting is bringing truth, transparency, and credibility back to the weight loss industry.  To practice truth, we collected 1500 research papers on over 40 diets and presented our research in Diets Don’t Work.  In an effort to practice transparency, we wrote out our Principles to be able to tell you exactly what we’re thinking and feeling as well as what goes into our decision making.

Our Principles explain our Program Offerings and views on Metabolism, Pitfalls of the Weight Loss Industry, Myths, Misinformation, Mindset, Evolutionary Biology, and Decision Making.  You don’t need to read all of them but we wanted to create a place where you could learn more about us and what we’re about.

We challenge other weight loss companies to outline their Principles to bring more transparency to our industry.  We’re not hiding anything.  All of our cards are on the table.  Our hope is that after reading our principles you’ll also view us as credible and worthy of your business.  Enjoy.

1.      There isn’t a “best diet”.

2.      There isn’t a magic formula or ratio of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates.

3.      Excess carbohydrates AND fats have contributed to overweight and obesity.

4.      Dietary adherence is, above all else, the most important factor in weight loss success.

5.      Don’t waste your time trying to find “the diet” that you can stick to.

6.      You need to get your diet “in sync” with your lifestyle.

7.      Nutrition can be as simple or as complex as you want to make it.

8.      You are not broken, your body is doing exactly what it is designed to do.

9.      Being overweight is not your fault, you do however, need to take ownership of it.

10.    Buy in, ownership, prioritization, and victimization.

11.    Willpower is overrated.

12.    Your lower brain centers will beat your higher brain centers every time.

13.    Control your environment, shape your body.

14.    Everything in Moderation...NO.  “Selective Moderation” should be our new term.

15.    If you’re going to eat a cookie, eat a real cookie, not some “health version” of a cookie.

16.    There are no “tips” or “tricks” to hack your physiology.

17.    Weight loss of less than 10-15 pounds is vanity weight and not health based.

18.    Health perfectionism is overrated.

19.    Lose as much weight as you can in the first two months of dieting to improve long term success.

20.    For weight loss, slow and steady does not win the race.

21.    We don’t give a damn about fat oxidation.

22.    Energy balance controls fat oxidation and long term weight loss.

23.    Any diet other than your own is a fad diet.

24.    There are no nutrition or fitness “gurus”.

25.    Theory versus reality.

26.    Elite level fitness is a hobby, not a health choice.

27.    In the diet world, nothing is new, everything is recycled.

28.    The weight loss industry and the general public have no appreciation for history.

29.    New isn’t always better.

30.    When it comes to nutrition information, ask yourself is this information important?

31.    Information is useless if you can’t apply it.

32.    People generally know what they need to do, they just need help doing it.

33.    Disconnected, niche health & wellness offerings make it difficult for people to manage their health.

34.    The line between health offerings necessary for health and those for hospitality and entertainment is extremely blurry.

35.    Nutrition is full of scare tactics, that’s not cool or helpful.

36.    Anyone can provide a study to support their product through cherry picking and taking things out of context.

37.    The terms evidence, research, science, and clinical study are so over used and diluted by marketing teams that they no longer mean anything.

38.    Testimonials are an unacceptable form of marketing.

39.    DNA based nutrition is not the answer to your problems.

40.    Many tech solutions to healthy eating live in an unrealistic, out of touch, futuristic, theoretical world.

41.    Are genes or the environment in which you live, work, and play more important to your dietary success?

42.    You cannot count calories and log food forever.

43.    There is no such thing as a slow metabolism.

44.    Metabolic rate does slow with weight loss.

45.    The answers to these three questions will help you decide what type of diet you should eat:

a.     Do you want to lose weight?

b.    Do you want to eat healthy?

c.     Do you want to lose weight AND eat healthy?

46.    You must identify what is more important to you, losing weight or eating healthy.

47.    You cannot out exercise a bad diet.

48.    The Science of Dieting is moving the diet field forward.

49.    The Science of Dieting is going to tell you the truth, no matter how much it hurts.

50.    At The Science of Dieting, we’ve created a product based on what you need, not necessarily what you want.

51.    The Science of Dieting is Truth Seeking.

52.    We believe in absolute transparency.

53.    The Science of Dieting exists to inform and inspire you but we’re not here for your entertainment.

54.    Simplicity.

55.    Sustainability.

56.    Flexibility, back-up plans, parachutes, and free will.

57.    Pills, powders, supplements, and elixirs are no replacement for real food.

58.    Knowing what not to do, can be as important as knowing what to do.

59.    Ignorance, Incompetence, and Maliciousness are holding back the health & wellness industry.

60.    The era of fad diets and gimmicks is going to be over soon.

61.    FINALLY!  The Science of Dieting would not exist without the monumental efforts of millions of medical professionals and lab scientists.
